Villa Tobler, Cultural heritage mansion in Kreis 1, Switzerland
Villa Tobler is a late Classicist mansion with Art Nouveau interiors located in Kreis 1, Zurich, and surrounded by landscaped gardens with winding paths and stone walls. The main floor contains four connected rooms for events accommodating up to 130 guests, while the ballroom holds up to 600 people.
Bank manager Jakob Emil Tobler-Finsler commissioned architect Gustav Albert Wegmann to build this substantial mansion in 1853. Major renovations in 1900 shaped its current form and Art Nouveau character.
The building has housed a theater since 1964 that stages contemporary performances and shapes artistic movements in the city. The spaces show how historical places can take on new cultural roles and functions.
The rooms work for different event sizes, from smaller gatherings to large receptions, depending on which space you choose. Visitors should plan ahead as the historical features and different levels of the house create a special experience that requires consideration.
A dragon fountain adorned with gold mosaics stands in the garden, created during the 1900 renovations and still striking today. A youth sculpture by renowned artist Richard Kissling also graces the garden and shows the artistic quality of that redesign.
