Schloss Paspels, Heritage château in Paspels, Switzerland

Schloss Paspels is a manor house in the Domleschg region with a striking southern facade featuring a grand outdoor staircase with ornate railings. The building complex displays a polygonal tower with a domed roof on its eastern side and combines multiple architectural styles added across centuries.

The castle was founded in 1695 by Johann Viktor Travers von Ortenstein and received a comprehensive renovation around 1730 that shaped its appearance today. A significant redesign followed in 1892 by architect Nicolaus Hartmann, who added decorative exterior elements in Swiss wood style.

The castle's interior spaces reveal how residents lived and entertained across different periods, with distinct decorative choices in each room reflecting their tastes and values. Visitors walking through notice how the painted ceilings and wall treatments tell stories about what mattered to those who called it home.

The property is located in Paspels and sits within easy reach of the surrounding area, with the distinctive outdoor staircase marking the entrance from the garden side. Visitors should check current access information in advance, as visiting conditions may vary depending on the season and current use of the buildings.

The exterior features sgraffito decorations from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a technique where colored surface layers are scratched away to reveal patterns beneath. This labor-intensive handcraft method is rarely seen today and gives the facade a later artistic layer than its core structure suggests.
