Innerjuvalt Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Rothenbrunnen, Switzerland
Innerjuvalt is a castle ruin perched on a narrow rocky ridge above the Domleschg Valley in Grisons, featuring two sections from different construction periods. The remaining walls reveal the basic layout and structure of this medieval fortification.
The von Juvalt noble family built this fortification around 1250 as a residential stronghold with a two-story residential tower. Over centuries the structure was altered several times and eventually fell into ruins.
The castle shaped how medieval nobles displayed power across the Grisons region through fortified stone structures. Visitors today can see how such buildings reflected the social hierarchy and defense needs of the time.
The site is reachable by hiking trails and sits at a vantage point with views down into the valley. Access to the grounds is open, though the paths vary depending on weather and season.
A 1979 restoration project added a new roof and safety repairs to the structure for visitors. Small groups can now rent portions of the site for private events, experiencing the castle from an intimate vantage point.
