Rhäzüns Castle, Medieval castle in Rhäzüns, Switzerland.
Rhäzüns Castle is a feudal fortress situated on a steep rocky promontory above the Hinter Rhine in Switzerland. The structure was built on a clifftop approximately 65 meters high, commanding views of the Domleschg valley and river passages below.
The castle was first documented in 1288 and served as a residence for the Rhäzüns family. The family's rule ended with the death of the last baron, Georges de Rhäzüns, in 1459.
The castle displays architectural elements from different periods, mostly dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, reflecting regional building traditions. The structure preserves features of local craftsmanship from those eras.
The castle is privately owned by Ems-Chemie AG and is not open to public visits. You can view the exterior from a distance in the surrounding area of Rhäzüns.
The fortress is part of a sequence of defensive structures along the Hinter Rhine and retains many original medieval walls and foundations. This position within a chain of fortifications makes it significant in the region's defensive architecture.
