Hochjuvalt Castle, Medieval castle ruins near Rothenbrunnen, Switzerland
Hochjuvalt is a castle ruin in Grisons with two distinct sections: an upper fortress perched on rocks and a lower fortress positioned near an old trade route. Together they form an example of medieval defensive architecture in Switzerland.
The castle began in 1216 under the von Juvalt family, who served the Bishop of Chur and held lands stretching from Feldis to Scharans. It later passed to the Rietberg family and gradually declined in importance.
The ruins show how castles served as centers of power and control in medieval times. Visitors can see the layout of living quarters and defensive towers that shaped daily life here.
The castle is not open year-round and only opens on special occasions. Visitors should check in advance or arrange group visits beforehand to plan a tour.
During World War II, modern fortifications were built near the upper section and tank barriers installed around the lower section. These remnants show how the site remained strategically important for defense centuries after its medieval heyday.
