Burg Wackenau

Burg Wackenau is a castle ruin sitting on a forested outcrop above the Rhine River near Bonaduz. The stone walls and structural remains show how the medieval fortress was built and positioned to overlook the river valley below.

The fortress was built to guard the important road heading toward Digg and Trins, though exact construction dates remain unknown. It served as a defensive point along the Rhine valley route during the medieval period.

The castle ruins represent medieval defensive architecture in the Grisons region, demonstrating construction methods used during the development of Swiss fortifications.

The ruins can be reached by a 20-minute walk from the parking area west of Bonaduz village. Good hiking boots are recommended since the path goes through forest terrain with uneven ground.

A viewing platform at the site offers views down into the Ruinaulta canyon and across the Rhine valley. This spot lets visitors take in both the castle ruins and the striking landscape surrounding them.
