Burg Belmont

Burg Belmont is a castle ruin perched on a rocky peak in Grisons at approximately 1,240 meters in elevation. The site features a main tower, defensive ring walls forming semicircular patterns, and scattered stone foundations across the uneven terrain.

The castle originated around the year 1000 and served as a residence for the Barons of Belmont. The family eventually abandoned the site to settle in another fortress closer to Castrisch.

The ruins reflect medieval building traditions with a main tower and defensive walls scattered across the site. These structures show how wealthy families of that era fortified their homes.

The site requires careful footing on uneven surfaces and steep slopes throughout the ruins. There are no wheelchair ramps or accessible pathways, so sturdy footwear and caution are essential.

Excavations between 1932 and 1936 uncovered a deep underground cistern positioned at the center of three main structures. This discovery reveals that residents had carefully engineered water storage systems on this remote mountain peak.
