Fidazer Bergsturz, Geological landslide site in Flims, Switzerland

The Fidazer Bergsturz is a major rockfall area near Flims with extensive debris spread across meadowland. The eastern side shows enormous angular stone blocks scattered across the slope, while the western portion contains softer earth and soil deposits.

The massive collapse occurred on Easter Monday in 1939 when a huge mass of rock separated from a steep cliff wall in the Flimserstein area. The event also destroyed a nearby children's home and left dramatic changes to the local landscape.

The Sunnehusli children's home, situated near the forest edge above the road to Bargis, was destroyed during the landslide, marking a significant local tragedy.

The site sits at an elevation between 1600 and 1800 meters and is accessible by hiking trails through meadows. Several viewpoints along the trails allow visitors to observe the full scale of the debris field from different angles.

A photographer happened to be on location and captured two images of the collapse within seconds. These rare photographs provide one of the few visual records of a major natural disaster from that era.
