Chironta Dam, Water reservoir in Arica y Parinacota Region, Chile
Chironta Dam is a large water storage facility in the Arica y Parinacota Region, built on the Lluta River to serve agricultural and community needs. The structure stretches roughly 300 meters and can hold up to 18 million cubic meters of water for irrigation and local water supply.
Construction of the dam began in 2017 and was completed on April 4, 2023, taking several years and costing around 140 million dollars. It was built to improve water management in the region and provide water to communities during dry seasons.
The reservoir sits in a dry and semi-arid landscape in northern Chile and is managed by regional authorities. Visitors should follow local regulations and keep the area clean, as safety precautions are in place to protect both people and the facility.
The facility was officially inaugurated on April 4, 2023 by then-President Gabriel Boric and represents national efforts to improve water management. Since its opening, life has improved for many farmers and communities who can now rely on steady water supplies during dry times.
