Statues of Qianxiang Temple, Buddhist temple complex in Jizhou District, China
This Buddhist temple holds more than 600 stone statues depicting Buddhist deities and religious figures spread across multiple chambers. The sculptures display different carving styles developed over many centuries of artistic practice.
The oldest figures were created during the Northern Wei Dynasty, while the youngest date from the Song period. The collection shows how Buddhist artistic forms developed over roughly 900 years.
The temple functions as a center for Buddhist teachings while preserving ancient stone carving techniques through its extensive collection of religious sculptures.
The temple is open to visitors and offers guided tours explaining the artistic details and background of each statue group. It helps to allow time to view the generously distributed statues across the space.
Forty selected statues from the temple collection are currently exhibited at the Suzhou Museum West until October 2023.
