Yuyang Gulou
Yuyang Gulou is a historic tower standing at the center of Tianjin with three levels and a square brick base featuring four doorways that open toward the city's main streets. The second level houses a large iron bell about 1.4 meters in diameter decorated with dragon patterns, while the ground floor contains a worship space honoring the goddess Guanyin and respected historical figures.
Built during the Ming Dynasty, this tower originally served to mark time for the city and announce important events to residents. It suffered damage during the Cultural Revolution but was comprehensively restored in 2001, when a large iron bell replaced the original drums it once contained.
Locals visit this tower to connect with their heritage and preserve memories of old Tianjin. During festivals, the structure gets decorated with lanterns, and residents gather here to celebrate and share stories passed down through generations.
The tower is easily accessible by buses 161, 168, or 184 stopping at the Gulou bus station, or by the nearby Gulou metro station, about a 5-minute walk away. The area is best explored on foot, especially in early morning or late afternoon when light is pleasant and crowds are lighter.
The large iron bell on the second level is known as the Bell King of Tianjin for its elaborate dragon decorations and impressive size. This artwork often goes unnoticed by visitors, yet it represents one of the tower's most valuable and crafted exhibits.
