Beijing Library, Municipal library in Yongshun, Beijing, China
The Beijing Library is a public municipal library in the Yongshun district of Beijing, China, housed in a modern building organized around terraced levels and a central pathway. It offers open-stack reading rooms, digital facilities, and lecture halls for public use.
Construction began in October 2019, and the library opened to the public in December 2023. It replaced older facilities and expanded public access to books and digital resources across the city.
The Beijing Library holds collections dedicated to classical Chinese literature and intangible cultural heritage, which visitors can browse directly on the open shelves. Walking through the reading rooms, you can see these works placed alongside modern digital resources.
A daytime visit works best because natural light enters through the glass facade and makes it easier to move around the building. Leave enough time to explore the different reading and event spaces without feeling rushed.
The roof and facade use China's largest load-bearing glass system, which channels daylight down into the interior spaces below. The columns supporting this system are shaped like ginkgo leaves, giving the inside of the building an unusual organic look.
