Grand Canal Forest Park, Urban forest park in Tongzhou New Town, Beijing, China
Grand Canal Forest Park is an urban forest area in Tongzhou with 713 hectares of land containing both water features and green space. Walking paths run along both sides of the canal, offering different perspectives as you move through the space.
The canal here is part of a waterway system that played a central role in Chinese transportation and trade for centuries. The entire canal network gained UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2014 for its historical importance.
The space reflects Chinese garden traditions through its carefully organized layout that guides you through different natural zones as you walk. Each section reveals how water and vegetation are arranged to create a sense of balance and flow.
The west side has wider, more accessible paths that are easier to walk than the narrower trails on the east side. There are several entry points throughout the park, with Taoliu Scenic Area being a common starting point for visitors.
The park was designed using the concept 'green as the body, water as the soul,' treating vegetation and water as parts of one living system. This approach shapes how the space feels and functions as you move through it.
