Slezská Harta Reservoir, Artificial reservoir in Bruntál, Czech Republic.
The Slezská Harta Reservoir sits among the hills of Nízký Jeseník, covering a long valley with calm water. A massive dam made of piled rocks holds back the Moravice River and shapes this wide body of water.
Construction took place between 1987 and 1997, leading to the flooding of six villages in the valley. Karlovec disappeared entirely under the rising water as the reservoir filled.
The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk stands by the water as a memory of the communities now beneath the surface. Its presence connects the present reservoir with the families who once lived in this valley.
The reservoir offers walking paths along the shores and views of the surrounding forests and hills. The dam itself is visible from several spots, especially along the northern shoreline.
The deepest point reaches about 62 meters below the surface, making it one of the larger reservoirs in the country. On some days when water levels drop, traces of the submerged villages become visible.
