Schwerte, Medieval Hanseatic city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Schwerte sits in the Ruhr valley near the southeastern border of the Ruhr Area, with mountainous Sauerland region to the south at 120 meters above sea level.

The town received civic rights in the 12th century and gained recognition through the production of crossbows, chest armor, mail shirts, and swords during the 15th century.

The Ruhrtalmuseum, housed in a former town hall from 1547, displays the industrial heritage of the region, including exhibits from the 1889 Rohrmeisterei water purification station.

The city maintains direct connections to Dortmund, Essen, Hagen, and Unna, with several sports facilities including swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf clubs for residents.

The Romanesque church of St Victor contains a carved altar from 1523 and preserves stained glass windows dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
