Schwerte, Medieval Hanseatic city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Schwerte is a medium-sized city in the Ruhr valley at the southeastern edge of the Ruhr Area in North Rhine-Westphalia. It sits at about 120 meters elevation and is framed by the hilly Sauerland region to the south.

The town received city rights in the 12th century and became known for making crossbows, chest armor, and swords. By the 15th century it had developed into an important weapons production center in the region.

St Victor Church with its Romanesque style shapes the city's character and shows Schwerte's role as a religious center. The church is seen by locals and visitors alike as a place with deep spiritual meaning.

The city has direct connections to neighboring Dortmund, Essen, Hagen, and Unna by car or train for visitors. Several facilities like swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf clubs are spread across the city and easy to reach.

The Ruhr Valley Museum is housed in a 1547 town hall and shows exhibits about the region's industrial past. A special highlight is the display about the 1889 Rohrmeisterei water purification station, which reveals how water treatment worked in that era.
