Kloster Graefenthal, Cistercian monastery in Goch, Germany
Kloster Graefenthal is a Cistercian women's monastery in Goch, North Rhine-Westphalia, close to the Dutch border. The site consists of several stone buildings, arcaded galleries, and garden areas, with a cafe open to visitors.
Otto II, Count of Geldern, founded the monastery in 1248 as a women's Cistercian community. The site remained continuously occupied through the political changes of the region over the following centuries.
The monastery today hosts markets, concerts, and seasonal festivals within its medieval walls and arcades. Visitors can see how the old stone buildings and garden spaces are used for everyday public life.
The grounds are best explored on foot, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. If you plan to visit during an event, it is worth checking access and any entry conditions in advance.
The monastery grounds can hold around 3,500 people, making it the largest historical event space in the Lower Rhine area. This explains why the site is regularly chosen for some of the region's biggest seasonal markets and gatherings.
