The Leipzig Museum of Ethnography contains over 200,000 objects representing cultures from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas within its extensive collections.
Founded in 1869 through Gustav Klemm's cultural collection, the museum relocated to its current location at the New Grassi Museum on Johannisplatz in 1929.
The museum presents permanent exhibitions focusing on global cultural practices, traditional artifacts, textiles, and artworks from indigenous communities worldwide.
Visitors gain access to research facilities, including a specialized library and study room containing extensive ethnographic materials and documentation resources.
During World War II, a bombing raid in 1943 resulted in the destruction of 30,000 objects from the museum's original collection.
