Alter Johannisfriedhof, Historical cemetery in Leipzig, Germany
The Alter Johannisfriedhof is a cemetery in Leipzig featuring numerous gravestones and monuments displaying styles from the Renaissance through to Classicism. The grounds are dotted with mature trees and form a green space where the different architectural styles of the graves stand out clearly.
The cemetery was founded in 1278 next to St. John's Hospital and became Leipzig's municipal burial ground in 1536. Its final burial took place in 1883, concluding more than 600 years of service as a place of remembrance.
The cemetery took its name from the nearby St. John's Church and served as the primary burial place for Leipzig's citizens, merchants, and scholars over many centuries. One can sense how important this location was to the city's social and economic identity.
The grounds are freely accessible and best reached on foot from Johannisplatz. The best time to visit is during the warmer months when vegetation is at its fullest and pathways are easiest to walk.
The cemetery preserves around 400 original gravestones with epitaphs, including a baroque crypt from 1726 adorned with sandstone columns decorated with Egyptian motifs. This unusual mix of historical graves and decorative detail makes it a surprising example of skilled craftsmanship.
