Dornheim

Dornheim is a district in Groß-Gerau situated along the federal road B44, combining residential neighborhoods with agricultural land. The settlement lies at an elevation of 88 meters and presents the typical character of a rural community with both older and modern buildings.

First recorded in 779 in the Lorsch Codex under the name Thornheim, the settlement maintained its status as an imperial village until 1249. This long period reveals its early importance in the regional political structure.

The old school building, now protected as a historical monument, serves as a gathering space for community events and youth activities. This structure remains central to how residents experience their shared local identity.

The area can be reached by the S7 S-Bahn line, which has a dedicated station serving the district and offering connections to Frankfurt. Public transport is the most straightforward way to visit, making arrival and navigation simple.

In 1863, residents built a synagogue that served as a center of Jewish life until its destruction in November 1938. This dark chapter in local history marks the loss of an important religious and cultural community.
