Kloster Gravenhorst, Cistercian nunnery and art gallery in Hörstel, Germany
Kloster Gravenhorst is a Cistercian nunnery and current art center in Hörstel that features a church, convent buildings, a mill with pond, and historic stone bridges crossing the grounds. The complex retains its structural layout with functional buildings arranged around the monastic core.
The monastery was founded in 1252 under Bishop Bruno von Isenberg of Osnabrück and operated as a religious community for over 5 centuries. Later it underwent conversion, which redirected the site from its original purpose.
The site now houses an art center that presents contemporary exhibitions within the preserved monastic rooms. Visitors encounter art installations that interact with the historic walls and give the location fresh cultural meaning.
The art center maintains regular weekly opening hours and offers free admission for visitors who wish to explore the exhibitions and grounds. The complex is easily walkable and the different areas are accessible from the pathways.
The site offers visitors the chance to borrow custom picnic blankets for outdoor meals among the art installations in the park. This service combines relaxed time spent with encounters of contemporary artworks within nature.
