Bevergern Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Hörstel, Germany.
Bevergern Castle is a fortification in Hörstel, with only the foundation walls visible today in the village center. The preserved remains show the spatial layout of a medieval military structure and reveal its original ground plan.
Ownership of the castle changed hands multiple times between the Bishop of Münster and the Count of Tecklenburg during the medieval period. It was demolished in 1680 and never rebuilt.
The name Bevergern comes from early settlers, and the ruins shape the village character today. Visitors can see from the foundations how the fortification once anchored the community.
The site is freely accessible and located centrally in the village, making it easy to visit. The foundations are at ground level, so no special footwear is needed and visitors of all ages can explore the site.
Archaeological excavations in 1910 uncovered sections of the original foundations hidden beneath buildings in the old town. These discoveries helped expand understanding of the medieval structure's extent and layout.
