Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum Berlin, Gas lantern museum in Tiergarten, Germany.

The Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum Berlin is an open-air museum in the Tiergarten that displays around 90 historical gas lanterns from different German cities. The lanterns line the park pathways and give you a sense of what urban street lighting looked like before the modern era.

The museum was founded in 1978 to preserve gas lanterns that were disappearing from streets as Berlin switched to electric street lighting. The collection documents an era when gas was the main energy source for urban lighting across German cities.

The collection represents different design approaches from various German regions, visible as you walk among the lanterns. You can observe how local building traditions shaped the appearance and details of street lighting across the country.

The museum is located along Straße des 17. Juni near Klopstockstraße and is free to visit year-round. The pathways are wheelchair accessible, making it easy to explore at your own pace during any season.

In the evening, the restored gas lanterns are lit with their original yellowish glow, illuminating the park paths. This allows you to see how the nighttime urban environment actually looked and felt in earlier times.
