Berlin Zoological Garden, Zoo and tourist attraction in Tiergarten, Berlin, Germany.
Berlin Zoological Garden is a zoo in the Tiergarten district housing around 20,000 animals from roughly 1,000 different species across all continents. The grounds spread over large areas with themed enclosures, animal houses, and pools.
The zoo opened in 1844 as the first in Germany and suffered heavy damage during the Second World War. Out of an original population of 4,000 animals, only 91 survived the war.
The main entrance features two elephant sculptures kneeling on pedestals, carved from Elbe sandstone and decorated with golden oriental details. This gateway is protected as a monument and reflects 19th-century architectural taste.
Opening times change with the seasons: the zoo operates from 9:00 to 17:00 in winter and until 18:30 in summer. Special shorter hours apply on December 24.
This is home to the only giant pandas in Germany, housed since 2017 in a specially designed enclosure. The arrival of the two animals from China followed several years of diplomatic negotiation.
