Weltkugelbrunnen, Fountain and sculpture group at Breitscheidplatz, Charlottenburg, Germany.
The Weltkugelbrunnen is a monumental sculpture featuring a red granite sphere 8.5 meters in diameter, surrounded by a water pool below. The structure rises 10 meters high and combines granite, concrete, bronze, and glass materials.
Architect Joachim Schmettau created this monumental work after winning a public design competition and it opened on August 12, 1983. The sculpture became a key landmark in the modern development of the Charlottenburg area.
Bronze figures inside the sphere show people from different parts of the world, meant to express how societies connect through shared human experiences. Visitors notice these representations as they walk around the installation.
You can reach the fountain via staircases from Breitscheidplatz or from the basement level of the Europa-Center shopping complex. The location sits in the center of the district and is easy to find.
The water in the pool was historically refreshed daily to maintain the purity of the system and preserve the sculptural elements. This intensive maintenance reflects how seriously the designers took the care of the installation.
