Die Stachelschweine, Political theatre in City-West, Berlin, Germany
Die Stachelschweine is a political cabaret located in the basement of the Europa Center, where the foyer was redesigned by the Aisslinger studio in 2019. The auditorium seats around one hundred people and creates a close setting between stage and audience.
The theatre was founded in 1949 at an artist and student venue called Badewanne, making it one of the oldest political cabarets in Berlin. During the seventies, the ensemble became the first German stage to tour Israel after diplomatic relations were restored.
The venue stages satirical programs that address current social topics while weaving in local Berlin references. Audiences experience performances that combine politics and everyday life with humor, often drawing on events from around the city.
The box office opens Monday through Saturday from two in the afternoon and Sunday from four, with drinks and snacks available during performances. The theatre is in the basement of the Europa Center and can be reached by elevator or stairs from the main entrance.
The name Stachelschweine, meaning porcupines, refers to the sharp commentary and pointed remarks the ensemble uses to address political topics. During performances, there are often references to current Berlin events that local visitors recognize with a knowing smile.
