Aschinger-Haus, Historical architectural structure in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin, Germany
The Aschinger-Haus was a commercial building in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf featuring ornamental facade elements that housed retail spaces and dining facilities. Its architecture displayed early 20th-century characteristics with carefully designed window frames and decorative details across the exterior.
The Aschinger brothers August and Karl opened their first beer hall near Spittelmarkt in 1892 and later expanded to multiple locations across the city. This building near Zoo Station developed as one of their later projects during Berlin's period of rapid economic growth.
The building served as a gathering place where Berliners and visitors could dine and socialize throughout much of the 20th century. Its spaces embodied the tastes and habits of a particular era in the city's social life.
The building was readily accessible from street level and contained both public retail spaces and a restaurant across its ground floor and upper levels. A 1973 redesign modernized the interior while the exterior maintained its original character.
The building was demolished in 2015 to make way for the Zoom shopping center, which now occupies this location as a major retail complex. Though the original Aschinger-Haus no longer stands, older Berliners still recall its importance as a meeting and dining destination in the heart of the city.
