Berlin Zoologischer Garten railway station, Train station in Charlottenburg district, Germany.
Berlin Zoologischer Garten railway station is a through station with elevated platforms in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, connecting regional trains, S-Bahn, and U-Bahn lines. The tracks run on a raised level above the street, and the entrances lead to stairs and lifts that bring you up to the platforms.
The station opened in 1882 under the direction of Ernst Dircksen as part of the Stadtbahn. After German division, it became the main long-distance hub for West Berlin and kept that role until reunification.
Its name comes from the neighboring zoo, founded in 1844, which gives the place a special urban character. Travelers often use the surrounding area to meet friends or grab food before continuing their journey.
Visitors will find lifts to all platforms and plenty of signs marking the different transport options. The U-Bahn lines U2 and U9, as well as many bus routes, are easy to reach from Hardenbergplatz.
The 19th-century steel structure still carries trains today and shows how engineers of that era built bridges and stations. Despite several renovations, the elevated position remains a feature from the founding period.
