C/O Berlin, Photography museum in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Germany
C/O Berlin is a photography and contemporary art museum in the Amerika Haus building in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin. The space spans several floors and hosts rotating exhibitions of photographic and visual works from creators based around the world.
The Amerika Haus was completed in 1957 and originally operated as a cultural center run by the United States in West Berlin. C/O Berlin moved into the building in 2014, bringing a new purpose to a space that had been empty for years.
C/O Berlin sits inside a building that once served as a meeting point between American and German culture, and that history still shapes the feel of the space. Today visitors can see photography exhibitions that bring together work from artists at very different stages of their careers.
The museum is within easy walking distance of Zoologischer Garten station, in a central and well-connected part of the city. For larger exhibitions it is worth allowing extra time, since the galleries spread across several floors.
Each year the museum gives an award to photographers and art writers under 35, offering them exhibition space and a chance to publish their work. This makes the venue one of the few photography museums with a formal program built around supporting people at the very start of their careers.
