Zoofenster, Modern high-rise building in Charlottenburg, Germany
The Zoofenster is a modern high-rise with 33 floors above ground and 4 basement levels, reaching 118.8 meters (390 feet) tall in Berlin's western district. It houses a Waldorf Astoria Hotel with 232 rooms and office space near the Zoological Garden station.
Planning for the building went through several changes before construction started in July 2008, with the official opening taking place on January 3, 2013. Its completion marked a significant step in the redevelopment of this city section.
The building stands alongside the Upper West tower as an architectural gateway defining Kantstrasse and framing views of the Memorial Church at Breitscheidplatz. This pair of structures has become a visual anchor for how the district presents itself to visitors and residents alike.
The building sits right next to Zoo station and is easily reached on foot, with the hotel entrance facing Kantstrasse. Visitors can view the lobby and architecture without a reservation, and the surrounding neighborhood offers many other attractions to explore.
Architect Christoph Mackler designed the structure with stone-emphasized facades to blend with surrounding buildings in this historic part of the city. This thoughtful approach demonstrates how new construction can respectfully fit into an established urban landscape.
