Haus Horst, Medieval castle in Hilden, Germany
The castle features defensive walls surrounded by water, situated between Düsseldorf-Benrath and Hilden near the old Cologne country road.
Built around 1250 as a knight's estate with a moated castle, Haus Horst became subject to disputes between the Counts of Berg and the Archbishop of Cologne.
The property transformed from a noble residence through centuries of different ownership to become a senior living community while maintaining its architectural significance.
Currently operating as a residential complex, the facility contains 300 apartments distributed across two connected buildings with medical services and leisure facilities.
The castle grounds were at the center of the 'Horster Lehnstreit,' an inheritance dispute that lasted from 1589 through the 18th century.
