Holbeinpferd, Concrete sculpture in Wiehre, Germany
The Holbeinpferd is a concrete sculpture in Wiehre located at the corner of Günterstal and Holbein streets. The work depicts a young horse and extends roughly 2 meters (6.5 feet) in both height and length.
Werner Gürtner created this concrete horse sculpture in 1936. The city of Freiburg moved it to its current location during the 1950s.
The sculpture transforms through spontaneous painting by local residents, who regularly refresh it with new colors and designs. These informal acts of decoration shape how people experience the place today.
The sculpture sits at street level at a corner, easy to view from any angle without restrictions. The tram line 2 stops at Holbeinstrasse if you are traveling from elsewhere in the city.
During a restoration in 2019, workers removed multiple layers of paint buildup that had accumulated over many decades. The cleaning revealed the original concrete surface beneath all those coatings from past painting sessions.
