Dreikönigshaus, Cultural heritage monument in Eastern Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
Dreikönigshaus is an 18th-century Baroque structure along Schwarzwaldstraße in Freiburg, distinguished by its simple regional architecture. The western portion remains standing today, while the eastern section was demolished due to fire damage and structural instability.
The building was constructed in 1748 to replace an earlier inn and initially served as a tavern until the City of Freiburg acquired it in 1920. This transfer marked the beginning of its new role serving the public.
The building served as a community kitchen from 1921 to 1966, offering affordable meals to residents during periods of economic hardship. This facility became an important part of local social life and supported many families in the area.
The western wing of the building is accessible near Schwabentor gate and offers a good vantage point of the city architecture. Visitors should note that the eastern section no longer exists and the overall structure may be limited in accessibility.
A wooden canal once ran past the building, transporting timber from nearby forests to storage areas during the 19th century. This system was typical of the region's industrial water management and shows how closely the structure was connected to the economic activity of its time.
