Bieberstein Castle, Medieval castle in Reinsberg, Germany
Bieberstein Castle is a medieval fortress in Reinsberg, Saxony, built on a rocky spur above the Bobritzsch River. A square watchtower rises above the rest of the complex and can be seen clearly from the surrounding area.
The castle was first recorded in 1218 and originally consisted of two separate sections built side by side. It was heavily rebuilt during the 17th century, after which it became a residence for Saxon administrators.
The name of the castle comes from the von Bieberstein family, who held the site during the medieval period. Visitors today can read the building like a timeline, noticing how each owner left a different mark on its walls and layout.
The castle now operates as a conference and event center and is not open for regular public visits. It is worth checking ahead of time whether special open days or events allow access to the grounds.
Between 1710 and 1720, the complex gained several new staircases, including an outer staircase on the west side and an inner stairway with four separate flights. This concentrated building effort in the early 18th century was not part of a full renovation but a targeted change to improve movement through the castle.
