Krombachtalsperre, Reservoir in Lahn-Dill-Kreis, Germany.
Krombachtalsperre is an artificial lake in the Westerwald region, covering roughly 95 hectares of water and situated at an elevation of 523 meters. The reservoir was built by damming a valley and now supplies hydroelectric power while protecting the area from flooding.
Construction of the lake took place between 1946 and 1949, requiring the relocation of the Herborn-Rennerod railway line to make way for the new water body. This project was completed in the post-war period as part of regional infrastructure development.
The northern shore forms a nature reserve within the EU Bird Protection Area of Hoher Westerwald. This section supports many breeding bird species and serves as a refuge for local wildlife.
The reservoir is easily accessible with walking and cycling paths around its shores that are open year-round. Various activities are available depending on the season, from waterside walks to swimming areas during warmer months.
During winter, cross-country skiers take to the surrounding paths in snowy conditions for outdoor recreation. Throughout the year, volunteer patrols help ensure safety and monitor conditions around the water's edge.
