Baltic Sea watchtower, Kühlungsborn

The East German border tower stands near the beach promenade in Kühlungsborn Ost, featuring a high-magnification telescope and searchlight installation.

Built in 1972, this BT 11 type maritime observation tower enabled the Coastal Brigade to monitor shipping activities and prevent escape attempts across the Baltic Sea.

The exhibition room contains artifacts from escape attempts, including an inflatable boat used by a family and equipment from the border patrol personnel.

Visitors can access the interior of the watchtower through a steel ladder, with information boards detailing documented escape attempts placed around the structure.

The structure remains one of only two surviving maritime observation towers from an original series of 27 constructed along the East German Baltic coastline.
