Auersburg, Medieval castle ruin in Hilders, Germany.
Auersburg is a castle ruin located on the southwestern slope of Auersberg mountain at approximately 757 meters elevation in Hesse. The remains include wall foundations, tower bases, and other structures that reveal multiple construction phases over time.
The castle's origins trace back to the early 10th century when land was acquired through an exchange with Fulda Abbey. A major reconstruction phase occurred in the early 12th century.
The ruins display elements of medieval defensive design such as wall foundations and ditches from different building phases. Visitors walking through the site can directly observe these structures and understand how the fortress once protected the surrounding area.
A hiking trail starting north of Hilders leads to the ruins and provides guidance along the route. Wear proper footwear as the terrain on the mountainside is uneven and requires careful footing.
The site changed hands between religious institutions and noble families over centuries. During the peasant revolts of 1525, insurgents set fire to and destroyed the interior structure.
