Buchschirm

Buchschirm is a mountain summit in the Rhön region rising to 745 meters, marked by distinctive basalt rock formations. The peak hosts an observation tower and telecommunications installation that serve both visitors and broader regional purposes.

This location holds religious significance dating back to 1706 when a pilgrimage chapel was constructed on the site. A Stations of the Cross path was later established between 1755 and 1761, marking the mountain's growing importance as a spiritual destination.

The name Buchschirm refers to the beech forests that once covered these slopes, reflecting the landscape that shaped local identity. Visitors walking here today can observe how the terrain and vegetation still mirror this historical connection to the land.

The summit is accessible via marked hiking trails and offers clear orientation landmarks through its observation tower. Trail conditions vary depending on the season and weather, so visitors should prepare accordingly.

Nearby stands the Thomas Morus House, which has functioned as an educational center with camping facilities since 1958. This facility has evolved into a significant venue for youth exchange and learning programs throughout the decades.
