Riesenhütte, Alpine hut in Chiemgauer Alps, Germany
The Riesenhütte is a mountain hut located at 1345 meters on a forested trail in the Chiemgau region, situated among a network of connected Alpine routes. Marked paths radiate from this point, linking it to other shelters and offering multiple hiking options.
The mountain refuge was established in 1913 and served hikers in this region for over a century. Following its closure in 2013, its role in the area shifted.
The hut serves as a meeting point where hikers gather and connect while traversing the marked routes of the region. It embodies the Alpine tradition of hospitality, offering visitors a place to rest and share their experiences.
The hike from the Lederstube parking area takes roughly two hours through forested terrain with a steady incline. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential, especially if you plan to spend more time exploring the surrounding trails.
In winter, the path becomes a popular sledding route that visitors can use with sleds. In summer, the summit of Riesenberg can be reached from this spot in under 20 minutes.
