St. Petri-Kirche, Gothic church in Wolgast, Germany
St. Petri-Kirche is a brick church built in the Gothic style, located in central Wolgast. The interior features three naves separated by octagonal columns, high side aisles with vaulted ceilings, and a striking west tower dominating the exterior.
A bishop established a place of worship here in 1128, replacing an earlier temple on the site. The current brick building rose between 1280 and 1350 in its later construction phase.
The name refers to Saint Peter and has shaped Wolgast's identity for centuries. Visitors can observe how this brick structure has remained central to the town's character throughout its long history.
The church is easily reached from Kirchplatz in central Wolgast and clearly visible from the surrounding streets. The west tower provides a viewing point where you can look out over the town.
Large wall paintings of the Dance of Death cover the interior, created around 1700. These artworks draw inspiration from famous designs by a renowned 16th-century artist.
