Wietzer Berg

Wietzer Berg is a hill in the Lüneburg Heath that rises 102 meters above sea level, with a mix of forested sections and open heathland on its slopes. The terrain slopes gently to the summit and provides views across the surrounding flat landscape.

The summit displays a monument dedicated to German writer Hermann Löns, who wrote extensively about the Lüneburg Heath and its character. The memorial reflects how central this landscape became to the region's cultural identity.

The open heathland here represents a traditional landscape that shaped the region for centuries, with scattered trees breaking up vast stretches of vegetation. The grazing sheep are part of how people have managed and lived with this terrain over time.

The area is reachable via several walking paths, with parking and an information board near the base of the climb. The routes are well marked and straightforward, making access to the summit easy for most visitors.

A flock of rare Moorland sheep called Heidschnucken lives in an enclosure at the summit and represents an old farming tradition specific to this area. This breed has adapted to the harsh heathland conditions over centuries and is now uncommon elsewhere.
