Großes Moor bei Becklingen, Nature reserve in Lüneburg Heath, Germany
The Großes Moor bei Becklingen is a nature reserve spanning roughly 850 hectares of protected wetlands across Celle and Soltau-Fallingbostel districts in Lower Saxony. The moorland displays open heathland, wet vegetation, and water channels that form the core of this protected area.
The raised bog formed over thousands of years, then faced drainage and agricultural changes starting in the 1950s before gaining protected status in 1985. The reserve designation allowed gradual recovery of lost wetland features.
The Heinrich Eggers observation tower lets visitors climb above the moorland and watch black grouse from an elevated viewpoint. People use the tower as a stopping point during walks or bike rides across the open landscape.
The site can be explored via cycling and hiking paths that cross the moorland and provide different viewpoints. A shelter hut with maps and navigation aids helps visitors find their way and offers protection from weather.
The River Meiße originates within this raised bog and supplies the water that sustains the largest black grouse community in the North German Plain. This unusual combination of a river source and a major bird population makes the site scientifically important.
