Werkzeugmaschinenlabor, Research laboratory in Aachen, Germany
The Werkzeugmaschinenlabor, known as WZL, is a research laboratory at RWTH Aachen University in Germany dedicated to production engineering and machine tool technology. It occupies several buildings on the university campus and houses workshops, test benches, and technical equipment used to study and develop manufacturing processes.
The WZL was founded in 1906 at RWTH Aachen, making it one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Germany. Through the 20th century it grew into a central point where engineering science and industrial manufacturing came together.
The WZL is known as a place where academic research and industrial practice meet directly, with many projects running in close partnership with companies. Visitors who walk through the workshops can often see students and engineers working side by side on the same machines.
The WZL generally receives visitors by prior arrangement, as most of its facilities are in active use for research and teaching throughout the day. Booking in advance allows a visit to be tailored to the areas most relevant to your group or interests.
The WZL is not a single lab but actually home to four separate academic chairs that operate under one roof. This arrangement is unusual in German universities and explains why such a wide range of manufacturing topics can be researched at the same time in one place.
