Karlsgarten in Aachen-Melaten, Medieval garden at Gut Melaten, Germany
The Karlsgarten is a historical garden at Gut Melaten in Aachen displaying wide beds filled with medicinal herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, and other plants from Charlemagne's Capitulare de villis. The layout includes diagonal paths, yew hedges, and viewing windows through beech borders that frame specific views of the surrounding landscape.
The garden opened in September 2000 and recreates the plant collection from Chapter 70 of Charlemagne's imperial decree for royal estates. This creation was based on the historical importance of such specialized garden programs during the Carolingian period.
A Turkish basalt sculpture titled 'Visions for Europe' marks the beginning of the European Sculpture Trail within the garden grounds. This artwork creates a bridge between historical ideas and contemporary art in the space.
The garden is freely accessible via Rabentalweg through the orchard or from Gut Melaten and features information boards and benches at its center. The wide paths allow for comfortable walks through the entire grounds in every season.
The garden plantings are based on a medieval list showing how Charlemagne organized practical farming on his royal estates. This reconstruction allows visitors to see the actual plant species grown in an ancient farming operation.
