Westpark, Public park in Aachen, Germany
Westpark is a public park in Aachen stretching between Vaalser Strasse and Junkerstrasse with walking paths, sports facilities, and a central pond. The green spaces provide different options for leisure and recreation within a connected natural area.
The park began in 1882 when textile manufacturer Emil Lochner purchased the land and developed it as Lochnergarten. The site kept this name until 1920, when it was renamed to become today's Westpark.
The park served as a major gathering place for public events and performances throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. This role as a community meeting point continues to shape how locals view and use the space today.
The park is accessible year-round and features designated barbecue areas plus sports facilities for different activities. Quiet hours apply from 10 PM onwards to respect nearby neighborhoods.
Between 1886 and 1905 the park operated as a zoological garden with exotic animals like lions, monkeys, and elephants. This early zoo function made it one of the region's main attractions before it became the recreational space it is today.
