Reiff-Museum Aachen, University museum at RWTH Aachen, Germany
The Reiff-Museum occupies a neobaroque sandstone building with elevated ground floor and two main stories at Templergraben Street in Aachen. The collection comprises more than 200 paintings from various sources and artistic styles spanning different periods.
Painter and professor Franz Reiff donated his art collection to the Technical University in 1902, leading to the museum's opening in 1908. This created one of the early art collections at a German technical university.
The collection displays copies of Old Masters alongside contemporary works and was deliberately assembled for architecture students' learning. It gives insight into how art education was practiced at the technical university in earlier times.
The collection is currently stored in the basement and visits require advance booking through RWTH Aachen University administration. It is advisable to plan your visit ahead and contact the university in advance.
On the second floor stands a preserved Rococo portal from 1740-1760, originally from a residential building on Pontstrasse. It represents a rare remnant of interior architectural details from that period that seldom survived elsewhere.
