CARL, Research building at RWTH Campus Melaten, Germany
CARL is a six-story research facility on Campus Melaten with a curved brick facade that forms the northern gateway to the Science Campus. Inside are laboratories, workshops, and testing areas dedicated to battery and power electronics research.
The center opened in February 2023 as part of RWTH Aachen's investment in battery technology and power electronics research. Its founding marked a major expansion of the university's research infrastructure.
The ochre-colored brick facade design references traditional electricity plants while incorporating modern architectural elements throughout the structure.
The facility is easily reached via Campus Melaten and serves as a natural landmark along the campus boulevard. The exterior can be viewed freely, but interior access should be confirmed in advance.
The building uses air-suspended foundations that allow researchers to conduct nano-scale measurements without vibration interference. This special technique enables highly precise experiments that would be difficult to perform elsewhere.
