Kloster vom Guten Hirten, Gothic Revival monastery in Aachen, Germany.
Kloster vom Guten Hirten is a Gothic Revival complex in Aachen with five floors connected by cross-vaulted corridors that display original tilework and traditional staircase designs. The site includes a former student dormitory, a washhouse, and a priest's residence, each part of the protected monument ensemble.
Built between 1886 and 1887 by architect Hermann Joseph Hurth, the monastery served as a Catholic institution for young women under the care of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. The order's presence there lasted until 1982, marking a significant shift in the building's purpose.
The Sisters of the Good Shepherd dedicated themselves to teaching and offering refuge to young women facing hardship, making the complex a place of practical care rather than just prayer. This social mission still feels present when walking through the corridors and spaces designed for learning and work.
The complex is located at Am Guten Hirten 4 with multiple buildings across the site that can be viewed from outside to appreciate the overall scale and function. Before visiting, check opening times and access restrictions, as the property is not always open to the general public.
A small cemetery with approximately 70 grave markers lies within the grounds, honoring the religious sisters who devoted their lives to work at this location. This quiet space preserves the memory of generations of women who served at the institution.
