Totenkopfhütte, Mountain hut in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
The Totenkopfhütte is a mountain hut in the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate, sitting at around 514 meters (1,686 ft) elevation and open year-round for meals and overnight stays. The building has several dining rooms, sleeping rooms of different sizes, and an outdoor area with play equipment for children.
The hut was founded by the Palatinate Forest Club to give walkers a place to rest during long tours through the forest. Over the decades it grew into a key stop within the wider network of forest inns spread across the region.
The hut is a meeting point for hikers passing through the Palatinate Forest, where regional food is served and long-distance walkers stop to rest before continuing their route. Sitting at one of the outdoor tables, visitors get a clear sense of how forest lodge culture still shapes weekend life in this part of Germany.
The hut is reached by well-marked trails starting from nearby forest parking areas, and the grounds have been made wheelchair-accessible. An indoor play area is available for families when the weather is poor, making it a workable stop in any season.
The name comes from the nearby Totenkopf, a rocky formation that hikers use as a landmark on the surrounding trails. Most visitors pass through without knowing the place has been in continuous operation for more than 100 years.
