Totenkopf, Mountain pass at 513.7 meters in Haardt range, Palatinate Forest, Germany
Totenkopf is a mountain pass at about 514 meters in the Haardt range of the Palatinate Forest. A well-developed road connects Breitenstein with St. Martin, making access to the region convenient.
The region was an important trade route during Roman times, connecting Speyer and Metz. An ancient burial mound with remains from that period lies near the old Roman road.
The name comes from a legend about a skull discovered in an ancient burial mound at this location. Today, hikers use the place as a natural meeting point while walking through the region's forests.
Two parking areas near the Totenkopf Hut serve as starting points for hikes through the network of local trails. The hut itself provides resting spots and shelter during longer walks in the region.
From here, hikers can visit three peaks in a single route and enjoy views of the Rhine plain and the Odenwald mountains. This walk combines several high points in one journey.
