Hellerplatzhaus, Mountain hut in Palatinate Forest, Germany
Hellerplatzhaus sits at 474 meters elevation between Platte and Oberscheid mountains in the Palatinate Forest, serving as a rest point for hikers. The building contains guest rooms, dining areas, and a kitchen operated by the Neustadt branch of the Palatinate Forest Association.
Built in 1903 as Neustädter Hütte, the structure underwent major reconstruction in 1910 and received an expansion in 1922. These construction phases reflect how growing numbers of forest visitors drove the need for larger facilities.
The hut embodies the tradition of hospitality in the Palatinate Forest, visible in its simple dining spaces and regional cooking. Visitors experience the everyday life of a mountain refuge that has served hikers and groups for generations.
Multiple marked trails lead to the hut, with the shortest route from Totenkopf parking area taking around 90 minutes. Sturdy footwear and weather protection are advisable since routes wind through forest where elevation can affect conditions.
A memorial stone numbered 190, called Ritterstein, honors Karl Wertz who managed the hut for many years. This stone marks a personal chapter of local history that visitors encounter during their visit.
